Portland Oregon Jobs Created by TIGER Funding
A new round of federal funding will help create Portland Oregon jobs in construction, design and engineering.
Mayor Sam Adams recently announced that the City of Portland Bureau of Transportation and Portland Development Commission have been awarded a federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery grant worth $23,203,988.
The funding will be used to support transportation the Portland Innovation Quadrant. The city's unique application faced off against 14,000 applications worth more than $60 billion for the $1.5 billion available throughout the country.
"This federal investment in our city could not have come at a better time for our economy," Adams said. "In addition to the immediate construction jobs, this project helps build the foundation for the City of Portland’s Innovation Quadrant, and our long‐term economic prosperity."
The funding in Portland will be used on the SW Moody Avenue reconstruction project in the South Waterfront district, which the application identified as a top priority. The area will be reconstructed as a green street with facilities to manage storm water and improve water quality and enhance watershed health.
"The Bureau of Transportation is ready to build this critical piece of transit infrastructure for South Waterfront," PBOT Director Susan Keil said. "We look forward to coordinating with our private and public sector partners to ensure this money is spent wisely and on time."
Construction on the project is expected to begin this fall. The project will generate more than 3,100 construction, design and engineering jobs. Of those positions, 1,000 will be directly funded by the grant and 2,100 will come from next year's construction of Oregon Health and Science University's Life Sciences Complex.
