Engineer Job Postings Decline

Those looking for science and engineer jobs (Click here) didn't have any more opportunities to find available positions online last month.

The Conference Board recently reported that the number of online employment ads for scientists and engineers continued to decline during October, but some of the losses were offset by declining numbers of job seekers.

Ads for life, physical and social scientists decreased by 1,100 to 69,200, while opportunities for engineers and architects declined by 900 to 113,300. On the other hand, ads for computer scientists and mathematicians increased by 7,200 to 409,000.

Science Careers found that during September, the number of unemployed job seekers in the science and engineering sector declined. Job seekers among life, physical and social scientists decreased by 14 percent from 83,100 in August to 71,500. During August, however, the number of online ads in the same sector also slightly declined, meaning the number of job seekers and available opportunities was nearly equal.

Among engineers and architects, the number of job seekers declined by more than 11 percent during September, while the number of job ads declined by 3,300, meaning there were about two job seekers for every available position.

Among computer scientists and mathematicians, there were about 236,100 job seekers during September. While online employment ads declined by 4,200 to 402,000, there were more available positions than job seekers.

Overall, the nation's economy had about 4.5 job seekers for each available job during September. The total number of online ads posted decreased by 83,200 to less than 3.3 million.
